Lent Studies 2017
Following our recent “new” tradition of a Lent course based on a movie, this year we are looking at the film Casablanca, and a Lent course prepared by Paul Karensa and Zoe Young. This was Premier Christian Radio's recommended Lent Course for 2015.
"Casablanca is the classic movie and provides a great basis for discussion of themes of sacrifice, repentance, suffering, loss and hope at Lent. Its wartime setting provides additional poignancy for study at a time of continued armed conflict around the world as well as the centenary remembrance of the first world war.
Miranda and Not Going Out writer Paul Kerensa makes an intriguing departure from his comedy writing, preparing this moving book in the style of the publisher DLT's classic movie-based Lent Courses.
A Beautiful Friendship is written with his wife, Zoe Young. It is designed to be studied by groups or individuals alongside the DVD of Casablanca, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman”.
Do come and join us at any of the venues and share in this Lent Study Course.
The suggested process is that everybody has the opportunity to see the film right through before the study period. If you want to come along for a screening on or after 28th February, please let our Stewards know - and let them know which dates are best for you. Additional dates and locations can be arranged.
The book to accompany the series will be available at £5 (cover price £5.95) and many people like a copy to take home for reviewing what happened each week, or to fill in for weeks they are unable to get to a session. These will be available at the sessions. For Rochford this will be on Wednesdays at 7.30pm in the Benson Room at the Church on the following dates:
The studies will run (sort of) in parallel at Rayleigh and Hockley Methodist Churches. In Rayleigh, the meetings will take place on Tuesdays - at the United Reformed Church at 10am and the Methodist Church at 7.30pm.
At Hockley Methodist Church they will be held at 10am on Thursdays.
You are welcome to attend whichever study group you wish, or more than one if you wish. bring a friend with you if you want someone to provide moral support!
